“And I saw a woman sitting upon a scarlet beast full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was clothed round about with purple, and with scarlet cloth, [cocco] and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls. And she held in her hand a gold winecup, full of abomination, and of the uncleannesses of her fornication. And on her forehead, a name was written: “Mystery. Babylon. The Great Mother of the fornications and of the curses of the earth.”
“And I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And I wondered with great wonder on seeing her.
“And the angel said to me, “At what do you wonder? I will tell you the mystery [misterium] of the woman and the beast carrying her, having seven heads and ten horns.
“”And the beast which you saw — it was and is not, and it shall be going to ascend out of the abyss and go to perdition. And those who dwell on earth shall wonder – those whose name is not written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world – seeing the beast that was and is not and will come.”
“”Here is the sense that holds wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, where the woman sits upon them; and they are seven kings. Five are fallen, one is, the other is not yet come. And when he is come, he must remain a small bit. And the beast which was, and is not – the same one is the eighth [head] also, and it is out of the seven; and it goes to perdition. And the ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom; but they receive power as kings one hour after the beast. These have one meaning; and they give their strength and power to the beast.”” (Rev. 17:3-13, VL)
